American Sign Language Join Carrie Pierce, a faculty member teaching ASL for UMaine, for the 'voice off' class.  Learn some basic vocabulary, beginning sentences and grammar through games, partner work and other activities.

Defensive Driving  Earn a 3 point credit on your driving record!  The Maine Driving Dynamics course is a five hour defensive driving/driver improvement program developed by the Bureau of Highway Safety.  Learn collision avoidance techniques and safety tips with videos, lectures, and class participation.  Attendance at both sessions is required.

Digital Photography To get the best from your digital camera you need to become familiar with and knowledgeable of two things:  1) the camera's operating system and 2) the art and practice of composing good pictures. This course will build upon and enhance the knowledge and skills that participants bring to class.  Topics will include cameras, operating systems, composition, light, aperture, technique, and critique. Subject matter will include nature, community, and people. Six two hour classes and one 6 hour Saturday field trip.   15 students maximum, so register early!

Reading for Pleasure

No homework unless you want to read more than you will during class time. Enjoy beautiful short stories by Truman Capote, mysterious works written by Dauphne Du Maurier as well as writing by four other authors who have entertained readers for decades. Informal discussion will follow each story reading. Information about the authors and types of writing will also be part of this course.

Spanish No experience necessary! This beginning class in conversational Spanish is for anyone just starting out. Emphasis will be on verbal communication, but basic reading and writing will also be presented. Students will know many common nouns and carry on simple conversations by the end of the course.

Wildlife Tracking Join these fields trips and track coyote, fisher, river otters, voles, bobcat and other native wildlife species.  Learn the basics of sign and track characteristics as well as track patterns associate with mammals, birds and amphibians.  Discuss habitat requirements and how animals shape their environment.  There will be off trail hiking in sometimes inclement weather.  Participants must be prepared for cold, wet conditions with appropriate clothing and footgear.  Rescheduling of trips due to bad weather may occur.  Your instructor, Diane Boretos, is a licensed tracker and biologist.

Writing for Enjoyment

With spring comes a renewed sense of creativity. Perhaps it is too early to plant seeds. It is always the perfect season to write in journals, letters to friends, stories or poems for yourself or others. Here is an opportunity to satisfy your creative soul and to begin the spring with your own season of growth.

Writing for Publication  Explore the intricacies of getting your work published.  Sheila Grant, a Maine Press Association award recipient, will guide you in generating writing project ideas, developing your manuscript, writing query letters, properly formatting your work for submission, and identifying potential markets for your work.  This six week course is excellent for beginners.  Sheila is a freelance writer contributing regularly to Game and Fish magazines, Bangor Daily News Special Sections, and the Northwoods Sporting Journal.  She is an award-winning member of the New England Outdoor Writer's Assocation.
